Doosan M-Series Cobots: The Versatile Workhorse

If you could only bring one cobot family into a plant that does a little of everything—some assembly, some machine tending, a welding cell, a finishing station, end-of-line palletizing—the M-Series is the one most teams should look at first. It's the broadest family in the Doosan cobot lineup, and its whole reason for existing is range: four six-axis models that cover an unusually wide span of payload, reach, and precision, all on a single control platform.

That breadth is exactly why the M-Series gets the "Masterpiece" branding. At HESCO, it's the family we point to most often when a customer's application list is varied or still evolving, because standardizing on M-Series arms means one programming environment, one safety architecture, and one integration approach across a fleet doing very different jobs. This article walks through what the M-Series is designed to do, how the four models differ, and what to think about when you implement.

What the M-Series Is Built For

Doosan lists a deliberately long application set for the M-Series, and it's worth reading in full because it signals the design intent: assembling power tools, machine tending, welding, polishing and deburring, palletizing, gluing and bonding, plastic injection support, and press forming. That's not a niche tool—it's a general-purpose manufacturing arm meant to handle the majority of cobot tasks on a typical floor.

Like the lighter A-Series, every M-Series model mounts in any orientation, so you can floor-, wall-, or ceiling-mount to fit the cell. What sets the M-Series apart is the combination of that flexibility with higher payloads (up to 15 kg) and longer reaches (up to 1,700 mm) than the A-Series, while still keeping tight repeatability on most models.

The Four Models

  • M0609 — 6 kg payload, 900 mm reach, 27.5 kg weight, ±0.03 mm repeatability, 370 W
  • M1013 — 10 kg payload, 1,300 mm reach, 34 kg weight, ±0.05 mm repeatability, 390 W
  • M1509 — 15 kg payload, 900 mm reach, 33 kg weight, ±0.03 mm repeatability, 390 W
  • M0617 — 6 kg payload, 1,700 mm reach, 35.5 kg weight, ±0.1 mm repeatability, 390 W

The spread here is the point, and each model occupies a distinct corner of the payload-reach map:

  • The M0609 is the compact, high-precision all-rounder—6 kg in a 900 mm envelope with the series' tightest ±0.03 mm repeatability. It's the natural choice for accuracy-sensitive assembly and tending in a contained workspace.
  • The M1509 keeps that same tight ±0.03 mm repeatability and the same 900 mm reach but more than doubles payload to 15 kg. When you need higher force or heavier parts in a confined space—press tending, heavier assembly, denser palletizing within a small footprint—this is the standout. It does this without getting meaningfully heavier than the M1013, at 33 kg.
  • The M0617 goes the opposite direction: a long 1,700 mm reach paired with a modest 6 kg payload. It's built for large work envelopes where the arm is moving lighter parts across a wide area—think tending multiple machines from one position or covering a broad fixture. Repeatability eases to ±0.1 mm, the trade for that extended reach.
  • The M1013 sits in the middle as the balanced default: 10 kg, 1,300 mm, ±0.05 mm. When no single dimension dominates the requirement, it's the safe general-purpose pick.

The wrist joints (J4–J6) run at up to 225°/s—faster than the heavy H-Series and a contributor to competitive cycle times on lighter tasks—with the base joints geared appropriately to each model's mass.

Where the M-Series Fits

Because the application list is so broad, it helps to think in terms of which model suits which job:

  • Machine tending is a core M-Series use case across all four models. Pick the model by part weight and how many machines one arm needs to reach: the M0617's long reach lets a single arm service a wider cluster, while the M1509 handles heavier workpieces in a tighter cell.
  • Welding benefits from the M-Series' reach options and smooth joint motion; the longer-reach M0617 and M1013 give the torch more envelope to work in.
  • Polishing, deburring, and finishing lean on the force sensitivity (0.2 N) common to the platform for controlled contact pressure, with the tighter-repeatability M0609 and M1509 suited to detail work.
  • Palletizing and plastic-injection support play to payload: the M1509's 15 kg capacity covers heavier cases and molded parts, though for dedicated high-stack palletizing the purpose-built P-Series is the better tool.
  • Assembly and press forming map to the high-precision models, where repeatable positioning matters more than reach or payload.

Implementation Notes

The M-Series shares the full Doosan platform, so the integration story is consistent with the rest of the family.

Connectivity covers EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, TCP/IP, and serial RS-232/RS-422/RS-485—the major fieldbus and PLC ecosystems, so the arm integrates with the controller already running your line. For programming, DART-Suite provides the drag-and-drop app interface and the Teach Cockpit handles two-handed guided teaching, with open-source Python support available for teams that want to script more complex behavior than a pendant comfortably allows.

On safety, every M-Series arm carries PL e, Category 4 certification with six joint torque sensors (0.2 N sensitivity) and a scanner-triggered collaborative zone for automatic speed reduction when someone enters the workspace. The collaborative rating still depends on a task-level risk assessment that accounts for your tooling and workpiece.

A few planning points: the M-Series is rated IP54 (suitable for general indoor manufacturing, not washdown), with a 0–45 °C operating range. The any-orientation mounting is a genuine layout advantage, but mounting angle interacts with effective payload and reach—confirm against the work envelope during cell design. And because all four models share footprint conventions and the same controller, mixing M-Series variants across a line keeps spare parts and operator training consolidated.

The Bottom Line

The M-Series is the versatile core of the Doosan lineup—four models spanning 6 to 15 kg payload and 900 to 1,700 mm reach, covering the widest range of manufacturing tasks on a single platform. For most teams evaluating their first or second cobot cell, it's the right first look. If your work is consistently lighter and faster, the A-Series may be enough; if you're lifting heavy parts or palletizing to height, the H-Series and P-Series take over—and all of them share the M-Series' control, safety, and connectivity architecture.
